Disparity in Rural Areas: Are the women dominated?
What is domination and submission?
Male domination and female submission is a common phenomenon in our recent age, which is highly observed in our village and rural areas. Every year, whenever we get time we try to go to our village home in order to pay a visit to my grandparents. Recently, I along with my family went there to celebrate Eid. This time I noticed something different. During Eid, all the male members got the opportunity to celebrate by going to the mosque together, enjoying a good chat in the village bazar and also enjoyed the delicious meals made by the female members. But the womens were left behind in all the aspects, they were forced to stay at home, forced to stay at the kitchen and make meals for the males, they weren't allowed to have any fun let alone go to the fair or bazaar. Not only this the women in our villages aren't treated with any sort of respect. Their humiliation begins from birth and end's at their death. They are dominated by the patriarchal society and remains submissive to them.
Now we have to understand what is domination and submission. To assert one's influence over others in their actions and behaviour is known as dominance and submission is the term which refers to being submissive and loyal or docile to someone or something. In this respect the influence and exertion of a kind of social power of men over women is indicated by the male dominance and the docile behaviour of women towards men is their act of submission.
Society's view point on this issue:
Society is main initiator of domination over women. It a common and acceptable scenerio in all our social institutions that men dominate, oppress, exploit women. In fact women are considered as passive dependents and property of their husband. Society tends to demean the women right from their birth and disables them from any sorts of right and justice. Society cripples the women from going further and hinders their progress and environment
Effects or Impacts of this issue:
Domination has a serious impact on the progress of the women in the rural areas. It hinders a women from taking education. As a resullt women lose their ability to become self solvent and become dependent on men. Moreover they can't take part in any kind of vocational training and falls behind.
Secondly, domination and submission results in physical and mental torture towards the women. Due to this issue dowry has become a common case in the rural regions. Moreover, physcial abuses, mental pressure and many other heinous crimes are commited by the family members of groom on the bride.
Thirdly, the village girls also become vulnerable to acid throwing, eveteasing, trafficking and other crimes. Due to this crimes, many women suffer short or long term mental and physical problems and sometimes many even commits suicide.According to a report by Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College (2010), about 4747 women and girls commited suicide due to physical and domestic violence from the year 2001 to 2010.
As we know that a country can't progress keeping half of its population in the dark. So it is impossible for Bangladesh to progress without making the women free from submission and domination.
Ways and Solutions:
In order to remove this issue at first the superstitious belief and the age old contradictory traditions must be modified. If the society progresses and broadens their perspetive then the growth and development of women in inevitable.
Family is the first institution of a child's growth. So if proper awareness and conscious is raised withen the parents then the disparity among the male and the female child wont occur, then the new generation will be free from this sort of domination.
Moreover enough training must be provided to the village women in different vocational works like sewing, household, agricultural and livestocks management works, so that they can become self sufficient. Enough micro loan should be provided to the women in this regard.
The primary, secondary level of education must be encouraged to the rural women and enough scholarship and stipend must be provided to improve the interest towards education.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, as a whole the condition of the poor women in the rural areas is very poor. They are heavily dominated by the men in almost all the sectors. So government and the concerned authorities to think of some action planning programmes in order to the save the women from the grasp of the male dominance and subordination.
